English language Challenges

Studyng a diferent language represents always a big challenge. And that not only because a new language require a lot of time to learn it well, it is also very important to incorporate the  new grammathic structure of the language and manage it well. And that isn't a easy work to do for us as spanish speakers, because english  have a very diferent grammathical structure that forces to think the language in a completly new form. A example for that is the verb 'to be', that for a spanish speaker can have two diferent meaning, namely, 'ser' or 'estar' depending of the context of the sentence. But, at the other hand, english learning have a big advantage: English is nowadays the universal language of the whole world. This special condition of english makes it a little more easier to learn, because it is very easy to get in contact with the language throught tv series, movies, books, adverticements, etc. Fortunately, this special condition makes that at least a basic level of english 'floats in the air and can be catch by anyone'.

I think for me isn't very dificult english to speak and learn, maybe because I already know the german language that seems like english. Despite that, knwoing german has also a bad side: I tend to confuse some words or expresions of the two languages. 

The english lessons have been a successful experience for me because it give me a instans to write and think in english, that is always a good excercise to practice a language. I think that a method like this, that is focus in the use of the language and not only in memorize it, is better to learn it because the method makes sense to the student and not only force him to do some things in order to reach a sufficient level of english.     

My future job

I don't know what I will work at in the future, the only thing that I'm pretty sure is that I will not work as a tipical sociologist. I know that it sounds very naive, but I really expect that in the future I won't do the same work as a tipical sociologer of our country. The reason behind my determination is that I hate my career when it becomes a meaningless practice, like the sociologers that spend much of their workdays studyng irrelevant things like the toothpaste preferences of the old people or the sexual behavior of the women after eating a chocolate tablet. Thatsway for me is very important to find a workplace in where I can do something full of meaning for me, like for example work in a ONG that thinks about the way of making a society without pollution and poverty, or maybe work with people that are thinking to implement a new social model. All this options would be nice for me, but I know that it isn't easy to find such a job, thatsway it is importan to do things every time in order to reach a good job and not only sit down on a chair and wait to get it. Based in this conviction I started to write my ideas in a notebook, tryng allways to give them a clearly structure that could be understand by anyone. I'm convinced that only through this efforts I will get a job that will be in the line of my thoughts and beliefs and not only sell myself to the labour market.      

Discrimination

Discrimination isn't a isolated problem of some people, in fact it is one of the most important aspects of the human being. This is a very sad reality that every society and also every single person of the world should fight, but there is some obstacles that make it a difficult fight to win. The first difficulty come from the psychological structure of the human being. It is wellknown that one way to give yourself as a person more selfconfidence and esteem is to discriminate another person and make him fell bad. That also works to hide your own problems, because when you discriminate somebody you externalyse your own problems and weaknesses. At the other hand, in what social life refer, the discrimination works reforcing the social links of a human group by damaging another group that is consider from the principal group as an inferior one. One historic example is the german people against the jews in the second world war, period inwhich the nazis built their own identity in opposition of the jew identity.
Thatswhy discrimination is a difficult human problem to fix. A lot of scientist and thinkers believe that it isn't posible to change this situation because the tendency to discriminate is one of our deeplier instincts. Howerever, in my personal opinion, I believe that we aren't totally governed by our tendency, we can change this situation if we take more conscious control of our cultur enviroment. And that's because the human cultur is the most poweful weapon that we have created, it can transform our way of life like not other animal can do. Then, why wold be so imposible for the humang being to change a basic tendency, if our culture do that every time?   A cuestion that we all should think about.        

How green are you?

If I have to give an answer to the cuestion "How green are you?" i would probably answer that I isn't  green enough. This afirmation doesn't mean that I pollute more than the normal people, in fact I practitice some habits that not every people do like riding to the university with my bike or recycling part of my trash. The reason that support my initial afirmation is that I think that we all should do much more for the envirommet to fix the huge ecological crisis that we produce with our urban way of living.  First of all, I think that we all should turn off our electric devices like the TV or the computer while we don`t use them. It's very annoying to see how many families let the TV on only to hear the noise of this infernal device! Other basic issue to save the planet is to save water. It is so common to see people that brush their teeth with the tap water open and the water flowing like a little waterfall. That should be change also! Other important point is to change the consume habits. If we try to reuse and not to throw away the things when they become "out", the mass of full of enthropy human objects would be reduce and that has a powerful impact on the ecosystem.
All the examples that were exposed in this article can help to fix the damage produce by us, and also there are a lot of more suggestions that you can follow to change this situation. But in general therms It isn't posible to revert the ecological crisis if we don't do a deep transformation of our social structures, like the economy or the sciencies. I'm convinced that only a new society that wouldn't be build over the consumism and the competence can face this challenge.

My best Holydays: A trip with my schoolclass

In 2008 January my class and I had our study trip in high school. We went to Brazil for 10 days and we were like 30 people. We worked trough all 2007 collecting money to pay the cost of the trip. 
Of course we didn't collect enough money to pay everyone's ticket, so we shared out what we have with our classmates who had the biggest economic problems.
In Brazil we went to Camboriú, a seaside city with amazing beaches and a humid weather. We had parties every night and we knew there the famous "Caipirinha", obviously I didn't drink a drop. During the day we visited some historic and some entertainment places of the city.
After a few days we went to another fantastic place: Foz do Iguaçu. There we visited the rainforest (actually almost everywhere in that city is a tropical rainforest) and the Iguazú waterfalls (an amazing experience, just look at the picture and you'll nearly understand). 
This falls was truly the best of the trip. You look at them and you start to fell a mix of respect, fear, love and a lot of other feelings. Something wonderful.
There we stayed for two more days and we get back to Santiago. I remember on that day I slept like 24 hours on a row. The trip let me really tired, but it was worthy.

First Term

Well, my first term was very good, terrible faster. It provide me of a lot of new sociological knowledge, but it also demand more time than the other terms.
A bad thing that happened was that I stopped to do sports. I usually played basketball, but the university rhythm didn't give me enough time to keep with it. I’m fatter, but I don’t care very much.
About friends I’ve to recognize that was a strange semester, I stopped seeing some friends because of the times, but I knew a lot of new people who studied with me and from others parts. A lot of changes occurred during the last months, included in my family, where my mother went to France for a work in May and stills there. There she has a good and establish job and she’s living with his brother who hadn’t see in a long time. My sister in her side finished his Art degree and started to work in the Catholic University has a teacher’s assistant and in a project of art intervention in the Villa Portales.
We can say that was a pretty moved term in all the ways but the sportive one.

My favourite Movie

Well, I’m not a real film buff and I don’t have a specific movie who has stolen my heart either. But don’t you think that is because I don’t enjoy seeing movies, actually I’ve seen a lot of this, but no one that I can say “this is the one!” .
I usually remember the movies because the situations and the people that had accompanied me on those moments and the things I had done after or before them, although every film let me something.
One that I keep in mind very good is Inglourious Basterds, a film of Quentin Tarantino, that I saw this summer (I think). Not a great movie, in fact the main actor is awful (you know what I mean, is Brad Pitt) in spite of the play of Christoph Waltz and the script who lumbered in some parts of the film. 
The movie tells two parallel stories: 1) Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) – a rude soldier- and a bunch of American Jewish soldiers who during the WW2 generate a special command in Europe with one only mission “kill Nazis” and 2) the life of Shoshana (Mélanie Laurent) who is a French Jewish girl persecuted by the Nazis. The stories get together when both planned two different plots to assesinate the same target in the same moment: the Nazi political cupola (Christoph Waltz is a SS general in charge of the security of them).
Of course is a total fiction movie and, as every Tarantino one, it’s full of blood and more blood. However the thing that I liked and, in my view, is the most important in the film is that includes so much popular images (like Hitler, the WW2, the Holocaust, the revenge, etc.) who got totally broken and cause you a shock in your mind and thoughts. Your think in the first place “How does Tarantino playing with so much history like if it was some kid toy?” You are in a difficult situation; you don’t see that often movies, books and that kind of stuff who break so much regularities. 
My favorite part is at the end, when Hitler and the Nazis are killed, is a part where you can think and reflect about the real meaning of fiction and history. You start to realize how much importance you give to things that are represented in a movie and how do you take those emotional concepts and deal with those during your life.
To sum up we can say that Inglourious Basterds isn’t a regular movie, have some shocking images, a very deep message and a tremendous space in blank to reflect about yourself and your environment way beyond the blood and screams during the film. Those are the main reasons about my choice.

My favourite class

For me isn't difficult to choose my favourite class: This is Sociological Theory. The reason why I choose this class and not another one is that this class is the natural space to discover and understand the sociological problems and the way how the sociology as a science try to give answers to these relevant cuestion for the understanding of our society.  For every sociologist is very important to have a basic perspective of the social structure, because it isn't possible to do a wellmade investigation without the apropiated knowledge to aboard the study object. The methodology isn't enough to give an answer to the investigation cuestion, you need to have a good theory that can guide the methodology in this direction. Thatsway is the Sociological Theory the most important class for every sociologist in his profesional formation.
And for me, personally, this class is not only the most important lesson, it is also the most interesting and amusing class of my career. I think that I prefer this class because in this lesson you need to read a lot of thinkers of diferent philosophy schools and that makes me a lot of fun because since I was in the school that I love to read Philosophy and History.  That are the reasons why I choose this class as my favourite one.   

Small summary of the new: "Chilean president present bill for national electric highway"

In this new it ies explain that President Piñera has just signed the bill that approves the constrution of an "electric Highway" that connect Chile from north to south. This project will unit the 99,2 percent of the energy system of the country in only one network. The announcement is an important sign for the energy companies, in especial these that are related whit the mega-dam project of Hydroaysen, because this Highway will provide these companies of a public electrical network that will be able to be use for their energy transmition requirements.
 This new is connected to the sociology despites its technical and unsocial appearance. The reason thats explain this link is the big importance of the kind of energysource in modern society. Nowadays it's not posible to think a society separated from his electrical generation system, because our lifes dependes more and more of the energy provision that keeps working our urban enviroment and economy. Moreover, the ecological menace of a dirty energy source like nuclear or termoelectric plants or a mega-dam that destroy the local ecosystem concern not only biology, it also implies social consequences that are studyobjects for sociology. At last there is a deeper point of analysis behind this project, I mean the development model and the vision of development that a society has. Is development the result of economic free forces, or it is the product of a colective deliberation? Can we change our behaviours in order to require less energy and live in a social system that do not destroy our planet? It is posible for modern society to change so deeply our way of live? These are the cuestions behind the development vision and the energy source.       

A country I'd like to visit

 

It's not easy to choose only one country of the whole world to visit. This selection become very dificult to me because I'm convinced that every country has something interesting to offered and if we follow this logic it's not posible to choose a country as a more interesting place in comparance to another one. But in general lines I think that maybe Rusia is a good option to chose for a travel in this moment of my life.  The first reason that support my decision is that my grandfather come from a little town in Rusia. He arrived here in Chile when he was just a child. In spite of his youth when he came here, he remember a lot of his childhood in Rusia and he always relate me how was the life in Rusia.
The second reason that support my decision is my interest for the unknown, for the exotic things. Since I was a child that I like the stories of lost lands and brave explorers, thatsway I tend to prefer the unknown places where you can surprice yourself with the difference of his culture. And Rusia isn’t a well known country for us!
These two reasons explain why I’d like to visit Rusia.
